Free vibration analysis of stiffened thin-walled structures

1. Aleksandar Borkovic, AGGF, Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Compound strip method is used to predict free vibration characteristics of stiffened thin-walled beams. Displacement field of compound strip is approximated with product of polynomials and free vibration eigenfunctions of Bernoulli-Euler beam which yields good convergence properties when applied to problems of structural dynamics.
Stiffened thin-walled structures have broad usage in contemporary engineering structures because of their favorable stiffness/weight ratio. On the other hand, this ratio makes them especially vulnerable to dynamic loading. Presented method offers simple, yet highly accurate, procedure for determining the dynamic properties of these structures.
Stiffness and mass matrices of compound strip are derived from strain and kinetic energy, respectively. Presented approach is applicable for straight thin-walled beams stiffened with longitudinal and transverse stiffeners. Close agreement of results is observed in comparisons with the ones obtained in ABAQUS.
