SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF COPOLYMER HYDROGELS BASED ON ACRYLIC AND METHACRYLIC ACID

Hydrogels based of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid has numerous applications, frequently in the area of biomaterials. The aim of this study is the synthesis of a copolymer of poly(acrylic acid-co-methacrylic acid), p(AA-MA), in equimolar ratio of comonomers with N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide as cross-linker and potassium persulfate as initiator in distilled water as a solvent. In order to structural characterization of synthesized hydrogels, the method of infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform (FTIR) was used. The swelling capacity of p(AA-MA) hydrogels was monitored gravimetrically in various media of pH (2, 6 and 10) and temperature (25 and 37 °C). The FTIR spectra of p(AA-MA) xerogel does not have any bands from valence C=C vibrations and deformation vibrations in the plane of the vinyl group (=C-H) of the monomer and cross-linker, which indicates that polymerization was performed by breaking the double bonds. The synthesized hydrogels p(AA-MA) swell intensively in basic medium (pH=10), reaching the highest value at 37 °C (α=40.55). In the acidic medium hydrogels p(AA-MA) swelling the least, and in a fluid of pH=2 showing the "overshooting" effect. The properties of synthesized hydrogels, enable their use as modern adsorbers of different fluids, paints, pesticides and as carriers for delivery of active substances.
