The development of nanotechnology has opened up new possibilities for the application of innovative materials in dental medicine, especially in jaw orthopedics.
Orthodontic therapy with fixed appliances often makes it difficult to observe oral hygiene due to the accumulation of dental plaque around brackets, orthodontic wires and adhesives. The result is an increased colonization of cariogenic bacteria, the appearance of enamel demineralization, the appearance of white spots, gingivitis, and the development of caries.
Incorporating nanoparticles into brackets, orthodontic wires, adhesives, and aligners aims to enhance their antibacterial properties and reduce the risk of caries development and enamel demineralization during orthodontic treatment. The most commonly used nanoparticles include silver (Ag), zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO₂), copper oxide (CuO), graphene oxide, and chitosan. Their action is based on inhibiting bacterial growth—particularly that of Streptococcus mutans, which plays a key role in the formation of dental plaque and caries. Consequently, the development of orthodontic materials with antibacterial properties has become a significant area of contemporary research.
