Personalized dentistry is a modern concept of dental medicine focused on an individual approach to each patient, with the aim of improving the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases. Unlike the traditional approach, which is based on the application of the same therapeutic procedures to different patients, personalized dentistry takes into account the unique biological characteristics of the individual, including the genetic profile, epigenetic changes, the composition of the oral microbiome, the presence of specific biomarkers, and environmental and lifestyle factors.
The development of genomics and molecular biology has enabled a more detailed understanding of the role of genetic factors in the development and progression of oral diseases. Individual genetic variations can influence the tendency to develop caries, periodontitis, peri-implant diseases, disorders of the development of dental structures and various forms of oral pathologies. Also, knowledge of the patient's genetic profile can contribute to a better risk assessment, earlier detection of diseases and the selection of the most appropriate therapeutic approach.
The use of saliva biomarkers, oral microbiome analysis, genetic testing, and advanced digital technologies open up the possibility of moving from a dentistry focused on treating existing disease to a dentistry focused on risk prediction and individual prevention. Such an approach allows for a better understanding of biological differences between patients and potentially increases the success of therapy and long-term treatment outcomes.
