Intelligent and smart materials represent a group of functional materials that can register and recognize external changes in their environment and respond to them by controlled, predictable and efficient changes in their physical, chemical, mechanical and/or tribological properties. The concept of smart materials, smart structures and structural systems was introduced when scientists began to integrate electroactive materials with large structures as sensors and actuators in real-world conditions.
Examples of smart materials are: shape memory alloys, piezoelectric materials, magnetorheological and electrorheological fluids, thermochromic materials, photosensitive materials, self-healing materials, etc. And they are applied in mechanical engineering, construction, electronics, medicine, automotive industry, aviation, robotics, systems for monitoring the condition of structures, etc.
The paper provides an overview of current intelligent and smart materials and their sensor-actuator structural applications. Basic, multi-field optomagneto-piezoelectric-thermoelectric behavior is emphasized, and new transducer technologies applied to complex problems from many fields, including elasticity, electricity, temperature, magnetism, light, and other interactions. Material history, characteristics, material variations, limitations, sensor-actuator structural applications, and so on, all the way to piezoelectricity, electro- and magneto-measurable materials, electro- and magnetorheological fluids, polyelectrolyte gels, superconductors, pyroelectrics, photostrictive materials, and photoferroelectrics are discussed in detail.
