The biodiesel synthesis from sunflower oil over the catalyst obtained from walnut shell was studied in order to estimate the possibility of using this cheap waste material in the biodiesel production. The catalyst was prepared by the combustion of the shell fractions left after crushing and removing the nuts followed by the calcination of the obtained ash in a furnace at 800 °C in the air atmosphere. The ash content of walnut shells was 6%. The biodiesel was synthesized in a stirred batch reactor at 60 °C under atmospheric pressure and intensive agitation (900 min-1) at the methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 12:1 and the catalyst loading of 0.5%, 1% and 5% based on the oil weight. With increasing the catalyst loading the reaction rate and the content of methyl esters increased. The mass transfer limitation was not observed at the beginning of the reaction. With the catalyst loading of 5% (based on the oil weight), the reaction was completed within 10 min reaching the methyl esters content of 98%. The contribution of homogeneous catalysis was also observed, indicating the leaching of catalytically-active species. The methanolysis catalyzed by lower catalyst loadings (0.5% and 1%) follows the pseudo-first order reaction rate law.
