PREVALENCE OF ENTEROBIUS VERMICULARIS AMONG PRESCHOOL CHILDREN WITH TWO METHODS

1. Erjona Abazaj, Institute of Public Health, Tirane, ALBANIA, Albania

Introduction: Pinworm is a cosmopolitan parasite with particularly high prevalence in countries with a temperate climate. It is estimated that approximately 200 million people are infected internationally. We assessed the prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis infection and also we have investigated epidemiological data on pinworm infection among 230 preschool and primary school age children between January 2009 and December 2010.
Methods: We have used two methods for diagnosis of E. vermicularis. The first one method was fecal concentration by Formalin-Ether 10% and second one was Graham's cellulose adhesive tape method from the skin in perianal region.
Results: Overall samples prevalence of infection with the first method resulted 5.2% (12) and with second method was 9.13 % (21) without any correlation between two methods OR 1.82 [0.87-3.8] with p=0.1. The most prevalent group ages contaminated with E. vermicularis was 4-7 years old. There was found a significant level between prevalence of infection and sex and age and some of epidemiological data like socio-economic level, number of children in the house etc with p < 0.05.
Conclusion: The prevalence of this infection was higher in Graham's cellulose adhesive tape compared to Formalin-Ether method without any significant level between them.
