On traffic tunnel ventilation design for critical conditions

1. Milan Sekularac, University of Montenegro, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Podgorica, Montenegro

Summary: Critical conditions for tunnel ventilation system sizing in unidirectional-traffic tunnels, occur during and after a fire incident. Smoke control and removal requires air velocities typicaly much higher than those required for ventilation. Unfavorable factors which augment the required sizing are the chimney effect, smoke induced resistance to flow, the possible reduction in the jet fan's exerted trust, and the external atmospheric pressure (wind), which in principle all occur in the critical case and act both by opposing the fan-induced flow direction and by reducing the exerted trust. Assesment of some of these factors requires detailed knowledge of flow and heat transfer conditions in the tunnel. An attempt is made in evaluating the aforementioned factors numerically and the results are discussed.
