The possibilities of documenting architecture of historical buildings using 3D scanners and 3D printers

The paper deals with the research of 3D scanner technology and 3D printers for documenting historical buildings. Documentation of the architecture of historical buildings, which are often buildings of the architectural heritage of interest to society, has always been challenging and demanding work, and necessary for the conservation, protection and reconstruction process.
Beginning with earliest, simple direct measurement methods, they have been developed and upgraded, incorporating geodetic and photogrammetric measurements that have significantly contributed to increasing the accuracy of the results. 3D scanning, as one of the last achievements in the field of real-time recording and the production of a models that have enough information for reproduction, has found use in the field of documenting historical objects. Unlike other methods, scanning has a complementary process - 3D printing, which enables the printing of whole buildings in desired scale, or only some details. The advanced capabilities of these technologies make it possible to capture damaged buildings or details that have missing parts, as basis for precise modeling of the original shape and further reconstruction.
