The basic disadvantage of the denture soft-lining materials is the dissolution of a plasticizer, the substance responsible for their elasticity. Material become hard, non-resilient, porous, easily absorb water and thereby create multifactorial conditions for the formation of a microbial biofilm resulting in an inflammatory response of supportive denture tissue. The incorporation of certain nanoparticles into soft-lining materials allows prolonged antimicrobial activity and preventing adhesion of microbe biofilm, alowing denture self-cleaning, especially important at people with physical or mental handicaps, who are not able to maintain oral hygiene. Nanomodification works in two directions: it extends the period of clinical efficacy of the material, improving its performance and reducing the accumulation of microbial biofilm. The combined action of antimicrobial nanoparticles and soft lining materials is a logical choice for denture stomatitis therapy because it treats mechanical lesions of denture supporting tissue, cures microbial infections and inflammatory response of denture tissue, as the most common clinical complications in mobile denture carriers. Considering of frequent resistance of microorganisms to conventional therapy, an alternative of the controlled, dosed and sustained release of the therapeutic agent, which results in the prevention of the inflammatory response of the supporting denture tissue, represents a serious therapeutic option for the future. The topic of this review is to get dentists familiar with the contemporary soft-lining denture materials, to present its mechanism of action as well as its superior mechanical, physical and biological performance compare to conventional materials.
