The paper presents the possibilities of Additive Manufacturing (AM) for 3D printing in medicine, with particular reference to the creation of the skull model for the planning of maxillofacial surgery. The research was conducted at the Center for 3D Printing at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Banja Luka and the University Clinical Center of Banja Luka. Procedures for development of rapid prototyping of 3D medical models, using AM, are presented. Modern methods and materials of the AM are defined, which are used for the development of physical models and individually adjusted implants for 3D printing in medicine. The process goes from 3D reconstructions from CT and MRI images to DICOM format. The optimization of the necessary part of the body and the implant was processed using the finite element method for simulation trials in one of the CAD software and it was converted into a physical model that was created with the AM of high accuracy, consistent with the appropriate anatomy. The 3D model of the head of one patient was printed out, which was developed directly from high definition Cone Beam CT, then converted to STL file format for rapid prototyping and printed on the Dimension Elite 3D printer by Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM). It is proven that 3D printing techniques for medical purposes can produce complex medical models very fast with high precision and quality and with the biggest positive impact on health.
