Abstract
Background: Collaborative goal setting is an important component of client-centered occupational therapy. The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) has proven to be a useful tool for setting goals in therapy. Since this is a semi-structured interview, the therapist's experience, skills and abilities, and knowledge of occupational therapy theory and practice influence the results. The purpose of our study was to explore occupational therapists' experiences using the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure in the process of goal setting. The research questions that guided the study were: What are occupational therapists' experiences with goal setting? How do therapists experience COPM?
Methods: Eight occupational therapists working at the University Rehabilitation Institute in Ljubljana participated in the study. Data were collected through in-depth interviews. A thematic analysis was performed to analyze the material.
Findings: Five main themes emerged from the analysis: Experience, familiarity with theory, differences between therapists, patients' wishes, and the psychology of goal setting.
Conclusions: Therapists employed at the University Rehabilitation Institute in Ljubljana mentioned several factors that they considered important for setting goals and using COPM. They emphasized the importance of appropriate wording of questions and interpretation of results, as well as the ability to guide patients toward realistic goals. Our findings question the client-centeredness of participants and the relevance of professional experience when it comes to collaborative goal setting.
