Contemporary view on the state of matter and energy in the cosmos

1. Branko Dragović, Matematički institut Srpske akademije nauka i umetnosti, Beograd, Srbija, Serbia

According to the standard model of cosmology, the cosmos in our time consists of 68% dark energy (DE), 27% dark matter (DM), and only 5% visible matter. According to this prediction, DE is responsible for the accelerated expansion of the cosmos, and DM should exist in galaxies and significantly affect the dynamics of matter within and between galaxies. Visible matter means all matter that is made up of known elementary particles, and that practically means the matter that makes up our planet Earth and ourselves, the solar system, all the stars and everything else that can be detected in the cosmos with telescopes. Although most physicists believe in the existence of DE and DM, their existence has not yet been experimentally confirmed despite intensive research in that direction. The existence of DE and DM implies the validity of Einstein's theory of gravity at all distances from the atom to the cosmos as a whole. Since Einstein's theory of gravity has not been verified at galactic and greater distances, some of theoretical physicists are working to extend that theory. The existence of dark energy and dark matter, or the existence of an extended Einstein's theory of gravity, is one of the greatest scientific breakthroughs and challenges of the 21st century. When it turns out that one or the other exists, it will significantly change our understanding of the cosmos and provide answers to many other questions. In this talk, I will try to present a modern view of the state of matter and energy in the cosmos in an illustrative and comprehensible way for a wider audience.
