THE ROLE OF AQUAPORINS IN PERITONEAL DIALYSIS

1. Andreja Figurek, klinicki centar republike srpske, Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina

peritoneal dialysis, as a method of treating patients with chronic renal failure, occurs due to transport characteristics of peritoneal membrane. This modality of treatment is based on the principles of osmosis and diffusion. Unlike soluble metabolic waste products which are removed according to the principle of diffusion, the excess water from the body releases by means of osmotic way. Ultrafiltration represents the amount of extracted water. Both processes depend on peritoneal semipermeable membrane structure and its transport characteristics. Water channels in the peritoneal tissue, through which the transport of water is carried out, are called aquaporins. The main role in this process has aquaporin-1, present in the endothelial venules and capillaries of the peritoneum. In fact, the function and expression of aquaporins-1 is important for the process of ultrafiltration, and consequently for the quality of peritoneal dialysis. Accordingly, the aquaporins represent a potential target for pharmacological activity of new agents in order to improve the quality of peritoneal dialysis. In this review paper is shown the role of peritonem in peritoneal dialysis process and significance of aquaporins in this process, as well as the future perspectives of this treatment modality.
